Government of Iran released an arrest warrant and also requested Interpol for help in detaining President Trump as well as other US military and political figures in this year’s killing of a prominent Iranian military commander.

Trump faces no immediate danger of detention, but the latest allegations provide fresh evidence that there is no sign of subsidizing friction between the US and Iran.

Qassem Soleimani was the leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, respected in his country and renowned for being mastermind behind many conflicts in the region and against the United States. Before his death by a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad on Jan. 3, he had not been widely known to most Americans.

Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency announced that the officials wanted in connection with Soleimani ‘s murder “have been charged with murder and acts of terrorism.” It added, “U.S. President Donald Trump is at the top of the list, and his trial will begin long after his term ends.”

With Trump present, NPR’s Peter Kenyon reported, “Iranian media quote the prosecutor general for Tehran saying that 36 suspects are being tried in connection with the killing of Soleimani.”

He also noted that the arrest warrant had been forwarded to Interpol along with a so-called red alert to disseminate the message to law enforcement agencies worldwide.

The Interpol, headquartered in France, did not comment on the matter.

However, it is unlikely that It will act on the request because the constitution of the organisation forbids it from undertaking “any role or operation of a financial, military, religious or ethnic nature.”

The U.S. airstrike that killed Soleimani was praised as a “decisive defensive operation” by Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who said Soleimani was planning attacks on U.S. diplomats and service members at the time.

On Jan 8, just days after the US airstrike, a retaliatory attack by Iran came in. Iran fired missiles at Iraq’s al-Asad air base, where US forces were deployed. As confirmed by the NPR, the attack later treated scores of American workers with traumatic brain injuries.

The acrimonious US-Iran relationship deteriorated even more after the US withdrew more than two years ago from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, widely known as the Iran nuclear agreement.

Under Obama’s presidency, the deal was signed in 2015 and included China, France, Germany, Russia, the European Union and the USA. It said Iran would agree to limit its production of nuclear weapons materials, in exchange for reduced sanctions.

“The truth is that this was a terrible one-sided transaction that should never have been made,” Trump said during an announcement in May 2018 that the US was withdrawing from the agreement.
