Real Madrid and Inter had previously faced off at the Bernabeu on Nov. 3 in Group B. Los Blancos almost lost it in spite of their two-goal advantage before the Brazilian duo of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo saved the club. Rodrygo, brought on as a late substitute by manager Zinedine Zidane, scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Vinicius Jr. in the 80th minute. The victory of 3-2 put Real one point behind leader Borussia Moenchengladbach and two points ahead of Inter in last place.
Before falling to Real Madrid, the Italians drew their opening two Champions League matches against Monchengladbach and Shakhtar Donetsk. In Serie A, Inter is coming off a solid 4-2 win over Torino. The Nerazzurri marched back to score four goals in the final 30 minutes after being down 2-0 to the visitors.
In all competitions, Manager Antonio Conte’s side has won just two of its last nine matches and has only two Group B points. Inter will need to be in good form to pull off its first campaign victory in the Champions League over Real.
The recent La Liga match between Los Blancos, a 1-1 draw against Villarreal, did not give them much momentum going into the match on Wednesday. However, hours before the Inter and Real match, Monchengladbach and Shakhtar will play, and if the game ends with the points shared by the top two teams, the Spanish champions will jump to the No. 1 spot.
