One Direction, dormant pop giants, celebrates its 10th anniversary on Thursday by unveiling a new website that features a series of celebration videos, archived behind-the-scenes clips and interactive playlists for fans to enjoy.
The much-loved boy band, which has been on hiatus since 2015, split their two-year Twitter silence on Wednesday to declare: “Tomorrow! You and me got a whole lot of history #10YearsOf1D.”
The pop sensation first emerged on the 2010 ITV talent show The X Factor and went on to make (quite literally) the Best Song Ever.
Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and previous bandmate Zayn Malik stole a lot of souls along the way too.
Let’s have a glance at their story below with reports of a 2020 reunion rife, and remember just what makes them amazing.
One Direction was born on The X Factor series seven, where they arrived the final-losing out to Matt Cardle.
Upon joining as individual artists, the five-piece was established as a group on the talent show, and soon signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco Records label.
The talent of the boy band was acknowledged with several Teen Choice Awards, Brit Awards and MTV Video Music Awards.
Of four UK number one albums and four number one singles, they ended up achieving massive chart popularity.
They have had worldwide hits with tracks like Best Song Ever, Little Stuff, Steal My Girl, Story Of My Life and What Makes You Beautiful-the latter being the most played One Direction track ever in the UK, as per music licensors PPL.
1D has also received the America Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards and the Billboard Music Awards, as they are lovingly considered.
I have sold over 50 million albums worldwide, and have also partnered with charities including Children in Need.
In 2015, when Malik left in the middle of a worldwide tour, the band of Five turned four, citing tension.
The departing member eventually named One Direction’s music “generic” as he went it alone, and said it did not fit his tastes.
One Direction started as a four-piece, but revealed they would go on hiatus later that year… Where they lived, until now.
All four, though, have established careers as solo artists since that time, but they still left the door open for a reconciliation.
In April this year, Payne (second left) indicated the group could be reuniting in 2020 to mark their 10th anniversary. “I’m not allowed to say too much obviously, because I’d be giving it away,” James Corden told presenter.
“But we’ve been speaking a lot more at the moment,” he added. “I think that we’re all feeling that that 10 year[s] is a very special moment.”
