You may be puzzled about all the fuss around Megan Is Missing if you’ve come across the title on social media. Is that genuine? Only how terrifying is it? EW breaks it down below for you.
What does Megan Is Missing mean?
Published and directed in a found footage style by American filmmaker Michael Goi, Megan Is Missing tells the story in North Hollywood, Calif., of two teenage best friends, Megan Stewart (Rachel Quinn) and Amy Herman (Amber Perkins). She disappears after Megan starts talking to a boy she met online, leading Amy down a treacherous road in hopes of finding her.
Goi, who later worked on American Horror Story and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, originally shot the film in 2006. It did not however, find distribution until 2011, when a limited theatrical release was granted to it by Anchor Bay Films.
How to watch it?
On Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and YouTube, you can rent Megan Is Missing. Below to watch at your own discretion, the trailer is also available.
Why is this controversial?
In New Zealand, Megan Is Missing is legally forbidden, with the Office of Film and Literature Classification of the country labeling it as “objectionable.”
“The feature portrays sexual abuse and sexual activity affecting young people to such an extent and degree that the publication’s availability is likely to be detrimental to the public good,” the office wrote.
The depiction of the film’s main characters, the acting of the novice actors, and the over-sexualization of the young protagonists were all panned by film critics.
“The motive of Goi was unquestionably optimistic, he’s a good guy who just tried to save the lives of children, but that didn’t stop Megan Is Missing from being dismissed as torture porn: it still looks and feels like an exploitation film, essentially,” said film scholar Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.
Is it telling a true story?
No. Though Goi based his film on real-life abductions of children, Megan Is Missing is not a real story in itself or based on a particular story. But it wouldn’t be wrong for people to assume that the events in the film actually happened, since it marketed itself as based on actual events. And amid a lot of criticism, Marc Klaas, the father of a 12-year-old girl who was abducted and killed in 1993, has supported it.
We’re going to leave it to you, but you should know that Goi commented on the revived success of his film and gave people interested in watching Megan Is Missing a warning.
“Goi said in a video on the website, “I got a text from Amber Perkins, the lead actress in my script, that it’s exploding on TikTok at the moment.
“I didn’t get to give you the normal warnings I used to give people before they watched Megan Is Missing, which are: don’t watch the movie in the middle of the night, don’t watch the movie by yourself, and if you see the words ‘Picture No. 1′ pop up on your computer, you’ve got about four seconds to shut the movie off if you’re still kind of freaking out before you start seeing stuff that maybe y’
He added, “Apologies to those who are already commenting about how they were freaked out by the movie. Fair warning to those of you who are still considering watching the movie.”
