Like many of the giant video game publishers, Electronic Arts this year moved from what would usually have been a huge E3 press conference in Los Angeles to a virtual-only experience called the EA Play Live.
The event kicked off Thursday at 7PM ET and featured a slew of major announcements from the various gaming properties of the company including the Respawn-made battle royale Apex Legends and Star Wars. The series of announcements also illustrated EA’s commitment to supporting its popular PC titles and cross-play Steam versions to allow different console and Windows platforms to play together.
We have rounded up all the biggest news from the show here.
Apex Legends is coming to Nintendo Switch and Steam and adding cross-play support
EA Play: Developer Respawn announced that both Valve’s Steam marketplace on PC and the Nintendo Switch would receive Apex Legends. The studio also says it will support crossplay across all platforms, meaning players can play together with console players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch on the EA’s Origin launcher or on Steam.
There is also a new seasonal event called “Lost Treasures Collection,” which will shake up core design ideas with a new limited-time game mode called “Armed and Dangerous Evolved,” introducing a portable resurrection tool to revive knocked out teammates on the go and new twists to player abilities.
EA is bringing The Sims 4, Titanfall 2, and more to Steam as well
EA announced that it would bring A Way Out, Dead Space 3, The Sims 4 and Titanfall 2 to Steam alongside Apex Legends, following its push to support more platforms on PC. This is a noteworthy change of direction for EA, which usually limited its games PC versions to its Origin platform.
Rocket Arena is an all-new multiplayer hero shooter coming July 14th
EA’s latest multiplayer game is launching for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on July 14th, with both Origin and Steam support on Windows. It is a hero shooter with a cartoon style in the style of Overwatch and a cast of 10 characters with special abilities. A year ago, the game was first revealed, and it is now set to launch in less than a month.
Star Wars: Squadrons’ first gameplay trailer shows off its exciting space combat
Star Wars: Squadrons is a new first-person space shooter that places you in the iconic Star Wars spacecraft’s pilot seat, including the X-Wing and TIE Fighters. It releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 2nd and will be fully playable on PS4 and PC in virtual reality, too. The gameplay trailer shows a bit of the story of the game and the five-on-five team fights.
A New Skate Game Is Coming
EA Play: We do not know much about this one, but at the end of their press conference, EA saved the revival of its much-loved Skate series as a “one more thing” surprise. Chris “Cuz” Perry, the director of the game, said: “It is the start. The evolution of the Skate continues.’
