The team announced that Dwayne Haskins, a first-round draft choice in 2019, on Thursday signed a reserve/future deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Earlier on Thursday, the sides met before Haskins formally signed the contract.
The Washington Football Team released the quarterback less than a month ago, the day after he was benched in a loss to the Carolina Panthers. At his girlfriend’s birthday party after the loss to the Seattle Seahawks, he was pictured without a mask. For his second violation of the protocols of COVID-19, he was fined $40,000 and lost his captaincy.
He tried to play against the Panthers, but he played badly and was benched. In place of Taylor Heinicke, who was signed to Washington’s practice squad less than a month ago, Haskins was then demoted. The day after the loss to Carolina, Haskins was then suddenly released.
“I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways,”I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways. “We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions these last two seasons and wish him well moving forward.”
“I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of an NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of this experience.” Dwayne Haskins wrote in a tweet. With his first NFL club, Haskins, drafted 15th overall by Washington in 2019 and regularly criticised as having a weak work ethic, had a turbulent career.
His choice was guided by owner Dan Snyder, going against the desires of the football side of the franchise. Ohio State’s coaches told the coaches that it would take him time to develop as a professional, and the organization was determined to make him sit down for his entire rookie season.
But injuries to other quarterbacks and a weak record led Dwayne Haskins to start as a rookie in seven games. Haskins finished with two strong outings to close his season after a disastrous early showing. He reported a 74.8 Total QBR combined in those games.
But his QBR total for the season was 28, and it was 31 this season.
With his signature, the Steelers signal that they are focused on a future without Ben Roethlisberger’s quarterback—either this year or shortly after. One year remains for the probable future Hall of Famer on his contract, but he has not yet decided his future with the franchise. Roethlisberger said he would think about the decision and consult his family after the Steelers’ wild-card defeat. He added that he hopes the Steelers will want him to return if he chooses to come back.
