(CNN) “Our duty was to come back prepared for this moment. It was tough, but we’ve made it.” That is how Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, explains the return of Spanish soccer’s top flight.
Spain has recorded a total of over 240,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including more than 27,000 deaths, but with new daily cases of virus below 50 now, La Liga resumes Thursday after just over 3 months without football.

One twist in the run-in of La Liga is that Real Madrid ‘s second-place will stage home games at its 6,000-seater Alfredo Di Stefano stadium — where the club ‘s second team plays — while renovations continue at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, which is 81,000.

Who will be champions?

As the league resumes, Barcelona remains with 58 points at the top of the standings, two ahead of Real Madrid, while the third-placed Seville is Los Blancos’ nine-point adrift.
If the reigning champion is able to win the league for the third time in a row, it will be Lionel Messi ‘s 11th La Liga title of his career, making him only one behind the 12 record currently held by the legend of Real Madrid, Francisco Gento.
It is one of the few La Liga records that Argentina has yet to crack, and it is one that fans in Barcelona would love to snatch from their Madrid arch rivals.Real Madrid players will not let this happen without fighting though — as midfielder Lucas Vazquez recently told Real Madrid TV that each remaining game would be treated by his side as if it were a cup final.

If Barcelona wins La Liga, Messi during his career will have won 11 Spanish league titles — one short of Real Madrid legend Francisco Gento.
“That’s the starting point for those 11 games that we have left,” he said. “Eleven finals, we take them like that, and hopefully from here to the end we can get all the victories and get the league title.”
Barcelona may have a slightly more difficult run-in of the two teams.
Both El Clasico games have already taken place, but Barcelona still has to face Atletico Madrid’s 2013-14 La Liga champions, who are in a fight to secure one of the four qualifying spots in the Champions League themselves. Diego Simeone ‘s team is in table sixth.
However, Barca will be boosted by the return of Luis Suarez who was expected to miss the remainder of the season following knee surgery but was able to recover in time after the league’s suspension due to the pandemic.

Many stories

The title fight is not the only theme in La Liga.
The fixture on Thursday is the Seville derby, between Real Betis and Sevilla.
Seville has not qualified in two seasons for the Champions League, and will be desperate to finish the season strongly.Getafe, a team that has never qualified for the Champions League and was in second division just two years ago, is also competing for one of the remaining qualification spots.

At the bottom, having finished seventh last season, Espanyol is currently supporting the table in La Liga with just 20 out of 27 games points.
For a club that has played in the top division since 1993, relegation would be a disaster!
The relegation zone consists of Leganes on 23 points and Mallorca on 25, with just one point above Celta Vigo.
Experience the fan
With matches played behind closed doors, La Liga has come up with a strategy to give the fans the most genuine experience in the circumstances possible.
Tebas said,”What we have decided is to give these two options on how the spectator wants to see the game: If they want to see it virtually with sound, or without sound.”
“We have partnered with a Norwegian business specialized in interactive audience and EA Sports and FIFA, so you feel the actual stadium sound everywhere when you play FIFA.
“I think we will see a good virtual reality, but they [the fans] will be able to choose what they want.”
