In the forthcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Anya Taylor-Joy will play the young Imperator Furiosa, it has been confirmed. The Witch Star, played by Charlize Theron in George Miller’s 2015 epic comeback film, was rumored for the role, but now it’s all nice and official.
Aquaman and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and the mighty Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, will join her on the bill, although specifics of their roles have not been announced.
Hemsworth took to Instagram to relay his joy, talking about the casting.
“He said,” Pretty damn fired up to be part of a franchise that meant the world to me in Australia as a kid growing up.
Mad Max was the focus and a huge reason why I got into the storytelling business. It is incredibly exciting that I will have the dignity of not only being directed by its original visionary in George Miller, but also participating in the story of Furiosa.
Deep respect for George, Mel, Charlize, Tom, and all the cast and crew who helped to make this epic world a reality. I will do my best to continue the cinematic badassery tradition.
Furiosa is introduced in Fury Road as one of the ‘war captains’ for the tyrannical Immortan Joe, who controls his post-apocalyptic citadel’s supply of oil.
Anya Taylor Joy turns on Joe, however, and sets out to free his concubines, the ‘five sisters’, to meet and reluctantly team up along the way with Tom Hardy’s ‘Nuts’ Max Rockatansky.
The war rig-driving warrior has a mechanical arm, but other than that, little about her back story is given away-well, nothing.
Anya Taylor Joy: According to previous interviews, Miller considered the possibility of casting Theron again in the role and using technology for de-aging, but instead went with re-casting.
As with Fury Road, Miller, with co-writers Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris, will both direct and write the film.
When writing Fury Lane, back in 2011, Miller and McCarthy had the ideas lined up for the Furiosa film and even had a sequel in mind, Mad Max: The Wasteland.
In 2019, Miller told Indie wire: “There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a story about Furiosa.” We’re still solving it, we’ve got to play the Warners thing out, it seems pretty clear it’s going to happen.
